Dell & Vista No Wonder I’m Crazy ! ! !

Kids do what kids do, hey they are supposed to do stupid stuff. Yes the kids bought a Dell. It took less than 24 hours for it to develop 114 errors on power up. They call Dell, they are connected to service in India. Despite the language barrier the Dell rep concludes it is a software problem and not covered under warranty. Estimated repair cost: $250.00 plus shipping. The computer cost $419.00. The computer goes back to wherever they bought it from. We learned latter they are an authorized Dell dealer with a contract with Dell for ALL software & hardware problems.

I would have called it a day right then and there took my money and ran. Nope, they took another Dell. So who gets to sort out this disaster? Who else, me. Here is a shot of the monitor one and one half hours into Vista doing its first power up update. The download speed from the Microsoft Vista site was 62k/sec. over broadband.

vista-2

One hour later it is doing this:

vista-3

Once Vista was happy it took less than half an hour to download, install and configure my favorite antivirus & anti spy ware programs.

Moral of this story:

Dell customer support = a big zero
Windows Vista = Less than a big zero

  1. Vista does suck. My computer is a Dell, but I also have my own live-in computer tech, so I never have to deal with them.

  2. My neighbour brought a Dell and call me over to help them with it. It has so much Dell crap on it popping up it was driving them crazy. I told them to wipe the Hard Drive and just install Windows XP (before Vista at the time). I have no real problems with my computer because it isn’t loaded down with a hundred apps running in the background stealing CPU cycles and bogging the system down. I think they ended up just taking it to Dell service for help. Which was very OK with me as I didn’t really even want to touch the Dell keyboard.

The new Windows 7 is really a bug and Windows crap fix for Vista. So, if they end up keeping the Dell with Vista, an upgrade/downgrade/sidegrade or whatever you want to call it is a MUST because it will help to get rid of some of the stupidity of Vista. My recommendation is to wipe the hard drive and UPGRADE to XP (after getting all the drivers).
