Our House

Our house is a very, very fine house
with two cats cops in the yard
I’d like to move my car
My driveway’s blocked again
because of you

Water & Weather

July 27, 2008 Arlene 2 comments

How high’s the water, mama?
Way too high and risin’
How high’s the water, papa?
She said it’s way too high and risin’

Well, the road is washed out south of town
I’m gonna head for higher ground
Not coming back till the water goes down,
Way too high and risin’

This all kind of fits with the confessions & breaking the rules discussion going on over at Shutter Sisters today but I think I’ll keep this just for us.

The weather around here has been miserable the past couple weeks. Hot, burning bright sun interrupted frequently by heavy rain, deadly cloud to ground lightning and thunder louder than a rock concert. That sequence occurs over and over all day an all night in addition to periods of hazy hot and humid nastiness.

When I left my weekly visit at my fathers house today I thought a drive around Saratoga lake might be nice since the lake is only a quarter mile from dads house. I expected the water to be high but not like this:

It is difficult to tell with the cover in place (no doubt due to the bad weather) but this classic wood hull speedboat is on a hoist system that normally keeps it above water until lowered for use. The access dock is completely submerged

You can see in this shot the dock is also under water. The door frame of my car is visible for a reason. I stopped on an unpaved access road to take these pictures. The road is now at the waters edge. There should be 30-50 feet of shoreline visible before you see any water in a photo taken from this perspective. Another day or two of this weather and the road will also be under water.

As for the confession & photo rule breaking I managed to get them all in one short shoot this afternoon. I pulled my camera out of my purse, switched it on and began shooting. I didn’t bother to check mode, exposure, ISO, nothing. I knew it wasn’t in auto mode since I never shoot in auto. It was in fact in full manual mode f7.0, 1/100 sec, ISO 100. Far from ideal settings but not that far off if you remember the sunny 16 rule of photography and apply it to hazy, hot and humid conditions. Seems I just bent that rule a bit but snapping pictures without checking settings is just plain stupid. I got away with it this time

Wheels

People say I’m crazy doing what I’m doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say I’ll be o.k. well they look at me kind of strange
Surely you’re not happy now you no longer play our game . . .
